2012 subaru impreza;

approximately 1.3 million model-year 2014-16 subaru forester suvs, model-year 2008-16 impreza sedans, model-year 2012-16 impreza wagons, model-year 2008-14 wrx and sti sedans, and model-year 2013-17 crosstrek suvs

the problem: exposure to certain contaminants may cause the brakelight switch to malfunction, preventing the brakelights from illuminating properly. it also prevents vehicles equipped with keyless ignition from starting, as well as continuously variable automatic and automatic transmissions from being able to be shifted out of park, increasing the risk of a crash.

the fix: dealers will replace the brakelight switch for free.

what owners should do: subaru will begin notifying owners april 29. owners can call the automaker at800-782-2783, the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
