2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell: Recall Alert

2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell: Recall Alert

2017 honda clarity fuel cell

vehicles affected: approximately 470 model-year 2017 honda clarity fuel cell electric vehicles

the problem: electronic control unit software responsible for monitoring voltage in the fuel-cell stack may misinterpret a minor voltage variance and erroneously shut down the fuel stack in response, which could result in an unexpected loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

honda noted that there have been no associated reports of crashes or injuries. the automaker advised that, if the vehicle experiences this issue, a warning message will appear on a screen below the speedometer, indicating "power system problem. stop driving when safe." if this warning appears, owners should stop the vehicle in a safe location off the roadway, as soon as possible; the vehicle can continue driving for a very short time using electric power from the onboard traction battery, the duration depending on the battery's current state of charge.

the fix: dealers will update the ecu for free.

what owners should do: honda will begin notifying owners in late february. owners can call the automaker at 888-234-2138, the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
