the problem: there's a possibility the torque converter in the continously variable automatic transmission could fail, which under certain conditions could result in a loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

the fix: dealers will replace the direct-shift cvt with a new one containing a new torque converter for free.

what owners should do: toyota is currently obtaining parts and will begin notifying owners by first-class mail starting in mid-february 2019. owners can call the automaker at 800-331-4331, the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
