  • the mercedes e-class coupe and cabriolet models are getting a similar refresh as the e-class sedan.
  • along with the visual updates, the e450 model now uses an inline-six engine instead of a v-6.
  • the 2021 e450 and amg e53 coupe and cabriolet will arrive in the u.s. by the end of the year.

throughout its history, mercedes-benz design has seen remarkable shifts and changes. current design chief gorden wagener has developed his own distinct styling language, and the current e-class coupe and cabriolet are arguably the most pure of all current mercedes models. a facelift for 2021 has managed to make these cars even more harmonious.

the panamericana-inspired grille, originally developed for amg models, has been refined and developed to combine subtle aggressiveness with elegance. the headlights align with the new grille, and altogether the car's nose looks more upright and substantial. the thin taillights shed their paddle-shaped inner lighting element and and look even more crisp than before. new wheels and colors complement the facelift.

the same changes apply to the amg e53 model, but it assumes a more aggressive demeanor. the front grille is dominated by vertical slats, like the amg gt's, and the rear end features four perfectly round exhaust pipes. meanwhile, the amg's front fenders are graced by gratuitous "turbo" badging—as if there was a single mercedes-benz model left without turbochargers.

like the recently updated 2021 e-class sedan, both the e450 amg e53 coupes and convertibles feature new steering wheels, with a pronounced, almost sphere-shaped central hub. they both feature the latest mbux system and upgraded infotainment.

both the e450 and the amg e53 are powered by daimler's latest-generation inline-six engine, both fitted with a 48-volt hybrid system and an integrated starter-generator that can start the engine silently, provide a slight power boost, and increase fuel economy. the amg e53's engine is unchanged, at 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque, but for the e450, the switch to from the previous 362-horsepower v-6 to the equally powerful inline-six should mean better mpg and a noticeably smoother demeanor. like before, the e450 will be available with rear-wheel drive or 4matic all-wheel drive, the latter being standard on the amg e53.

for the first time, amg is offering the sporty dynamic plus package on a model with fewer than eight cylinders. the regrettable reason for this is that there will be no v-8–powered amg e63 version of either the coupe or the cabriolet.

mercedes says the updated 2021 e-class coupe and convertible models will go on sale in the u.s. by the end of the year. prices have yet to be announced but they should remain close to the current range which starts at $65,345 for the e450 coupe and goes up to $82,645 for an amg e53 cabriolet.
