  • mini is updating the countryman suv lineup for 2021 with new looks and features.
  • the three-cylinder cooper, four-cylinder cooper s, high-performance jcw, and hybrid se versions remain.
  • the 2021 countryman will go on sale in the u.s. this summer.

when mini launched the first-generation countryman, it shocked loyalists. the crossover suv took the brand—whose very name suggests nimble, small proportions—straight into the mainstream. the second generation kept the size, but its more angular appearance broke with some of mini's key styling rules. now we are entering the second phase of the mini countryman's second generation with a restrained but clearly recognizable facelift, and a number of technological advances.

the front end has been cleaned up, with more purist decor on the characteristic front grille and newly standard led headlights. the rear end is now graced by taillights in the form of a half union jack each, a symbol of british national pride that was launched in the midst of brexit.

the designers had fun with the new wheel, color, and trim options as well, and there continues to be a large variety of different options and styles. we applaud the comeback of the blue interior. the digital instrumentation has changed its appearance, and the central infotainment screen is upgraded as well and uses the latest mini connected connectivity system.

mini has upgraded the turbocharging systems of the available engines, but power output stays the same. the entry-level turbo 1.5-liter inline-three in the cooper countryman and the all-wheel-drive cooper countryman all4 makes 134 hp while the turbo 2.0-liter inline-four in the cooper countryman s and s all4 continues with 189 horsepower. the all-wheel-drive-only john cooper works version continues at 301 horsepower. the most complex of countrymen, the plug-in-hybrid countryman se all4, keeps its the combination of a three-banger gas engine and an added electric motor for a total of 224 horsepower.

the plug-in hybrid is the only countryman to continue with a six-speed slushbox. meanwhile, the front-wheel-drive models are now fitted with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and the nonhybrid all-wheel-drive models all come with an eight-speed torque-converter-style automatic.

mini says that the 2021 countryman models will arrive in the u.s. this summer. we expect small pricing upticks from the current car's starting prices of $29,250 for the base cooper, $33,250 for the cooper s, and $42,250 for the john cooper works.
