while toyota decided to not extend the trd treatment to the 2021 corolla—unlike its counterparts, the camry and avalon—the sedan is getting the next best thing, an apex edition. this limited-edition sport package can be had on the se and xse corolla sedans, giving them a tuned suspension, chassis, and available summer tires.
corollas equipped with the apex edition come standard with the 169-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder which comes as optional on the corolla but will be paired to a sport-tuned exhaust. most of the apex edition corollas will come with the continuously variable transmission (cvt) currently available on the corolla, but 120 of the 6000 which go into production will come with a six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching capability. those with the manual transmission will be based on the se trim level.
the apex edition-equipped corollas get an updated appearance, most notably in the front fascia. it gets a more aggressive-looking stance through sporting a rear and front spoiler and copper accents running across the front of the vehicle. new coil springs also lower the vehicle 0.6 inches, adding to the sporty appearance.
that new suspension is track-tuned and as a result, stiffer, which is intended to reduce body roll and improve steering response. body roll is also decreased through solid stabilizer bars with higher rigidity. to top it all off, summer tires wrapped around 18-inch aluminum wheels are optional on the apex edition.
toyota didn’t disclose how much the apex edition sport package would add to the se or xse trim levels, but those trim levels start at $23,230 and $26,680, respectively, for 2021. the apex edition will go on sale this fall.
