here is our first glimpse at the second-generation lexus nx, thanks to our spy photographers who caught a prototype of the new luxury crossover testing. this new version will replace the aging current-generation nx, which has been around since 2014. in addition to the more modern styling seen here, we also think the new nx will feature different engines, as lexus has filed for new model names including nx250, nx350, and nx350h.
fitting into the lexus suv lineup between the ux and the rx, the 2022 nx will competes mostly with subcompact models such as the bmw x1 and audi q3. we expect the new version to once again share components with the toyota rav4, meaning it will transition onto the front-wheel-drive ga-k version of the toyota new global architecture (tnga) underpinnings. it may grow slightly in size, with a longer wheelbase and wider track.
lexus recently trademarked the names nx250, nx350, and nx350h, which suggests that the engine lineup will change compared with the current nx300 and nx300h models. we think the nx250 will have a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four, meaning the current turbo 2.0-liter inline-four could be dropped. the nx350h moniker suggests the hybrid version will be more powerful; lexus could possibly use the 302-horsepower plug-in-hybrid setup from the rav4 prime. and if the nx350 follows the convention used for other lexus models, it will have a 3.5-liter v-6.
expect a far nicer interior than the current nx's dated cabin. lexus has been moving towards touchscreen infotainment systems and away from its finicky touchpad controller, and the new nx likely won't be an exception. the two-row, five-seat layout will remain.
lexus hasn't officially confirmed the arrival of a new 2022 nx, but we should hear more information later this year. when it eventually goes on sale either late in 2021 or early in 2022, it should start at just under $40,000.
