  • this is the next-generation mercedes-benz c-class sedan, spied with minimal camouflage.
  • it has similar design cues as the s-class flagship sedan, which was also recently redesigned.
  • we expect the new c-class to arrive in the u.s. in mid-2021 as a 2022 model.

mercedes-benz is getting ready to reveal the new c-class, but our spy photographers got an early glimpse. this prototype for the new c sedan has minimal disguise, giving us a good look at the new model's styling. we expect this new version to wear a w206 designation, although its overall design is evolutionary enough that we wouldn't blame you for mistaking it for a facelifted w205 model.

the new c-class will ride on an updated version of its predecessor's rear-wheel-drive platform, and all-wheel drive will once again be an option. the hood appears a bit lower, and the front end will adopt the newest benz grille design seen on the new s-class and updated e-class sedans.

the rear end appears to feature slimmer, more modern-looking taillights with a sort of teardrop shape. we've heard that the new c-class will provide more trunk space than before; it's hard to tell size from these photos, but we wouldn't be surprised if the new model grows by a few inches.

for the u.s. market, the c-class will likely continue with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four as its base engine. it may adopt a c350 designation to match the one-size-up e350 base model. amg models should start off with a c53 powered by a turbocharged inline-six and move up to a c63 with a 500-plus-hp twin-turbo v-8. a plug-in hybrid may be part of the lineup, too. rumors suggest that the coupe and convertible body styles may not continue for this generation as mercedes attempts to restrict the number of build combinations for each model line.

the biggest changes for the sedan may be seen inside, as was the case with the s-class. this spy photo shows a new steering-wheel design and digital gauge cluster. although we can't see the infotainment setup, we won't be surprised if it features a large touchscreen like the massive 12.8-inch unit seen in the s-class.

these prototypes look finished enough to suggest that the new c-class's official debut is not far off. we think the reveal will take place early next year before the car arrives in the u.s. later in 2021 as a 2022 model. pricing may rise somewhat from the current car's starting price of $42,650.
