the current subaru wrx was introduced back in 2014 and is feeling a bit long in the tooth based on its rough nvh, stiff ride, and dated interior. these spy shots we just snapped reveal that subaru's not sleeping on the job, though. this is our first glimpse of the 2022 subaru wrx that's due to arrive next year.
look past the swirling-toilet camouflage and you can see that subaru's rally-inspired sport compact will feature fat fenders, a wide hood scoop, quad exhaust tips, a subtle rear spoiler, and a diffuser-style rear valence. we know few things for certain about this next wrx, but we can make some predictions with confidence. the wrx is likely to get a version of subaru's fa24 turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four, which makes 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque in the ascent three-row suv. like the current model, the next-gen wrx is likely to offer a choice of a six-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission. all-wheel drive will, of course, be standard.
there's a good chance that the fa24 engine will be tuned to produce more than 260 hp in the wrx. we caught this wrx driving through car and driver's hometown of ann arbor, michigan, tailed by a four-cylinder ford mustang wearing a manufacturer license plate. we're assuming that means subaru is benchmarking ford's ecoboost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four as part of its development process. that engine makes between 310 and 330 horsepower, depending on how the car is equipped.
we should know just how potent the next wrx will be within a couple of months. if we could strip back the camouflage from this prototype, we'd expect to find a nearly production-intent car. subaru should start talking about details soon.
