the volkswagen golf gti is entering its eighth generation, and it will arrive in the u.s. late next year as a 2022 model. unfortunately, the base model of the mk 8 golf likely won't make its way to our shores, vw says, but the high-performance golf gti model will, and it will have host of new standard features—and some new options, too.
the new golf gti will feature an illuminated grille up front. integrated into the lower honeycomb grille are 10 individual led fog lights. under-the-door puddle lamps that project onto the ground from the mirrors are also standard on the new gti, and 19-inch wheels are available for the first time ever in the u.s. they can even be had wrapped in sticky michelin pilot sport cup 2 rubber.
inside, the mk 8 golf gti has a fully digital cockpit. the steering wheel now comes heated as standard, has touch-sensitive buttons, and fronts a digital gauge cluster. to the left of the steering wheel, you'll find the exterior lighting controls, which are also adjusted via touch-sensitive buttons. a head-up display and a harman/kardon sound system, which replaces the fender system, are both optional. the standard heated seats are wrapped in a new plaid design, traditional for the gti, although heated and ventilated perforated-leather seats are optional. a six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a seven-speed dual-clutch (dsg) automatic is available.
the 2022 volkswagen golf gti is planned to arrive sometime in late 2021. volkswagen says it has yet to decide whether the gti or the higher-performance r model will arrive in the u.s. first. pricing is expected to start around $30,000.
