  • 2022 bmw i4 ev will have a 300-mile range and up to 530 horsepower.
  • the vehicle, along with the electric 2022 ix suv, will be out early next year, bmw says.
  • both vehicles are part of the bmw group's plan to have 50 percent of its global sales be electric by 2025.

during its annual bmw group conference, the german automaker unveiled the production version of the 2022 i4 electric sedan. while much of the market is focusing on electric suvs, it's refreshing that bmw is bringing essentially an electric 4-series to the ev world. still, for those hoping to sit higher and have a bit more cargo room, bmw has you covered with the upcoming 2022 ix electric suv. both vehicles are expected to be available sometime early next year, part of the automaker's plan to have 50 percent of its annual global sales be from fully electric models by 2025.

the 2022 i4 gran coupe will come in multiple trim levels, with the top end of the line making 530 horsepower and targeting an epa-estimated range of 300 miles. that powerplant is expected to push the i4 from zero to 60 mph in about four seconds. bmw says that an m performance variant will also be available.

bmw didn't share information about pricing, but it's likely to compete with tesla's model s, audi's 2022 e-tron gt, lucid's 2021 air, and the porsche taycan. tesla and lucid are still offering more range with 517 miles and 520 miles for the air grand touring and model s plaid+ respectively. both are beyond what's available from any of the traditional automakers. the e-tron gt is expected to top out at 238 miles of range while the taycan 4s will stay on the road for an estimated 227 miles before needing a charge. but as ev adoption grows and drivers realize that their daily driving habits don't require 400-plus miles of range outside of a road trip, some buyers might opt for the automaker they know instead of offerings from newer companies.

meanwhile, the i4's top-end 530 horsepower puts it in league with most of the competition. the taycan 4s, starting at $105,150, has 522 hp while the upcoming e-tron gt starts with 522 hp on the $100,945 premium plus trim level before ramping up to 637 hp on the rs variant. lucid's air starts at 480 hp before skyrocketing to 800 hp on the grand touring model that'll set you back $139,000. as for the leader of the ev pack, the $81,190 model s long range has 670 hp while the not yet released new model s plaid+ will come with an incredible 1020 hp if you're fine with parting with $151,190.

the vehicle along with the upcoming ix electric suv, is part of bmw's push for electrification that the company outlined today. the automaker is still targeting an architecture that allows the same model to be available as a hybrid, ev, or gas-powered vehicle. bmw says that the core of this modular architecture will be electric. even with that ability to choose, the automaker claims that well over 50 percent of its global sales will come from evs by 2025.

to achieve this, the company expects to have 25 ev models on the road globally by 2023. by 2031, the automaker is targeting having 10 million bmw group evs on the road. another piece of the bmw ev puzzle, in addition to its flexible architecture, is that the mini brand is expected to go completely electric by the early 2030s.

more details about the four-door 2022 i4 gran coupe will be out in the coming weeks. meanwhile, what we do know is that the 2022 i4 and the 2022 ix are both expected to be available sometime in early 2022.
