  • a new report suggests that alfa romeo's plans for the gtv have changed.
  • it was originally planned as a two-door version of the giulia with a hybrid powertrain.
  • now it appears that it may end up as a four-door electric vehicle similar to the tesla model 3 and bmw i4.

a new report from autocar suggests that alfa romeo has had a change of heart for the revival of the gtv. while the company announced years ago that a new gtv was coming in the form of a two-door version of the giulia with a 600-hp hybrid powertrain in its top quadrifoglio trim, that plan has apparently been dropped. instead, it could now take shape as a four-door ev that could potentially compete with the bmw i4.

the latest rumor is that the gtv name could now be used for a more stylish "four-door coupe" version of the giulia sedan, similar to the relationship between the bmw 4-series gran coupe hatchback and the 3-series sedan. it may offer both gasoline and electric powertrains, which would also mirror bmw's strategy with the gas-powered gran coupe and its fully electric stablemate, i4.

we don't know much about a potential ev drivetrain that could power this new gtv, as alfa romeo has yet to announce any plans for an electric platform or any other future ev models. the upcoming tonale will have a hybrid powertrain, but the gtv is unlikely to use the same platform as that compact suv. to compete with the i4 and other ev sedans such as the tesla model 3, it will need at least 300 horsepower and a driving range of around 300 miles.

although there's not a clear timeline for when the new gtv will arrive, we should hear more about this new model within the next year or so as the company's plans solidify.
