ford has announced plans to recall 17,692 of its all-electric mustang mach-e suvs built between february 2020 and june 2021 because their windshields may not have properly adhered to their frames during production. in a filing with the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa), ford says impacted owners will be notified starting october 27. owners of the vehicles are advised to take it to their local dealer for repair.
in addition to the windshield issue, 13,544 mach-es are also recalled for a similar issue that affects the suv's glass sunroof. in that filing, ford indicated that if loose, the suv's roof glass could potentially fly off while the vehicle is in use, causing a road hazard.
the cause appears to be improperly bonded adhesive used during the manufacturing process, and the suggested fix seems fairly straightforward. ford indicated that the fix for the sunroof involves adding additional urethane adhesive to ensure the glass does not separate from the roof. the windshield will be removed and reinstalled using the correct amount of adhesive, ford said.
recalls of this nature are concerning for drivers, of course, but it could be worse. ford's crosstown rival, chevrolet, has been wrestling with a more serious and more widespread issue with its bolt ev hatchback and bolt euv suv, which has resulted in a stop-sale order and a more onerous repair.
the mustang mach-e is made in cuautitlán izcalli, mexico. the plant opened in 1964 and previously built popular ford models such as the f-series pickup truck, the thunderbird, and the tempo and contour compact cars as well as several similar models from the now-discontinued mercury brand.
