Infiniti Pares Down Sedan Lineup for 2020, Dropping Q70 and Base Version of Q50

  • infiniti is paring down its sedan offerings for the 2020 model year, dropping the mid-size q70 sedan altogether and eliminating the q50's base engine.
  • the q50 now comes standard with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter v-6 engine; the previous turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four is no more.
  • the 2020 q50 goes on sale this fall with a starting price of $37,425.

infiniti discontinued the qx30 crossover earlier this year, and the luxury brand's lineup continues to shrink for 2020, this time on the car side of things. the q70 mid-size luxury sedan will not return for the new model year, as first reported by motor authority and confirmed by infiniti's website. the compact q50 sedan also slims down offerings for 2020, dropping the base four-cylinder engine and now coming standard with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter v-6.

the q70 was known in a previous life as the third-generation infiniti m and has existed in its current form for many years. we're not surprised to see it disappear, as sales have slowed to a trickle in recent years. infiniti has sold only 2196 units of the q70 so far in 2019, a tiny fraction of the 19,755 units the smaller q50 sedan has moved.

the base version of the q50, too, is getting the axe for 2020. the 2.0t pure model with a mercedes-sourced 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four is gone, and a new 3.0t pure trim with the 300-horsepower, twin-turbo 3.0-liter v-6 now serves as the least expensive q50. pricing rises accordingly, but not by as much as you would think, as the 3.0t pure is only $750 more than the previous 2.0t pure, and $1900 less than the 3.0t luxe that was previously the cheapest way to get the v-6. (the closely related q60 coupe had already dropped the 2.0t model for 2019.) a 400-horsepower version of the v-6 remains available in the red sport 400 model.

infiniti isn't abandoning the idea of sedans entirely, though, as the company showed a concept car last year called the qs inspiration that seemed to foretell some sort of flagship sedan model coming in the not-too-distant future. with a platform said to accommodate both e-power hybrid and fully electric powertrains, this forthcoming model will be important for establishing infiniti's electrified era. we're guessing it could possibly wear the q80 name to firmly situate it at the top of the lineup.

in the meantime, the q50 and q60 will have to hold down the car fort at infiniti dealerships, and the 2020 versions of both these models will go on sale this fall.
