after first teasing us with an illustration at this year's pebble beach concours d'elegance, infiniti has released another image and a few more details about the upcoming 2020 infiniti qx55 suv. the obscured photo above shows the qx55's dramatic coupelike roofline, fastback liftgate window, and a prominent roof spoiler, all of which will help it go toe to toe with the bmw x4 and the mercedes-benz glc coupe.
the qx55 will be based on the qx50 suv, which c/d happens to have for a long-term road test right now. the qx50 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. the engine features a novel variable-compression system that aims to provide maximum power when called upon and heightened fuel efficiency when cruising. in our experience, it's only marginally successful, but the qx55 will likely be offered with this same engine.
front-wheel drive and the qx50's continuously variable automatic transmission (cvt) are likely to be standard on the new model, with all-wheel drive optional. infiniti hasn't released any information about the suv's interior, but the sloping roof and pinched rear will undoubtedly come with a few compromises to rear-seat headroom and cargo capacity.
we'll find out more when the qx55 is officially unveiled, which we believe will happen in early 2020. the qx55 should be on sale shortly after its debut to capitalize on consumer taste for boldly styled small suvs with a starting price around $40,000.
