Is Dodge Building a Hybrid Durango?

fca us llc

it looks like dodge is planning to add a hybrid variant of the current-generation dodge durango to its portfolio. according to a report on mopar insiders, citing the recent united automobile workers agreement with fiat chrysler, the durango could get fca's etorque 48-volt hybrid system as early as next year. it’s not clear if dodge will go with the 3.6-liter pentastar v-6 or the 5.7-liter hemi v-8 for hybrid models, but both currently exist under the hood of ram pickups.

comparing the two v-8 variants of the current ram pickup, we see that the hemi v-8–powered variants get a 2-mpg city boost with the hybrid system and 1 extra mpg on the highway, too. considering the current v-6–powered durango nets 19 mpg in the city, any boost to that number is a welcome addition. hemi-powered dodge durangos get 14 mpg in the city, with 17 mpg combined: that's thirsty.

currently, the pentastar-powered ram 1500 bests the v-8 variant in fuel economy, so we'd say it's probably safe to assume that the upcoming hybrid durango will come with the v-6. the v-8 might not be out of the question considering the room for growth for its fuel economy, but we wouldn't bet on it.

this isn't the first-time dodge tried to squeeze better fuel efficiency out of the durango with electrification. the short-lived dodge durango hybrid joined the second-generation models at the end of its run.

we expect official news to make its way out of the rumor mill in the coming months. if the report rings true, we're going to see a durango hybrid sometime before the end of 2020.
