land rover, porsche, and volkswagen vehicles have done well as lego speed champion sets, and now lamborghini is back in the lego game as well. a new speed champions set that will go on sale in january features the huracán super trofeo evo and the urus st-x.
unlike some previous lego racers sets, the new lamborghini models will be eight studs wide. that matches the upcoming jaguar i-pace and formula e race car speed champions set that was announced earlier this month and allows for a slightly more authentic shape to the build. lego designers have made the shift to the wider size despite controversy over the decision. the speed champions line launched in 2015 with vehicles from ferrari, mclaren, and porsche, and all sets in the series so far have been six studs wide.
for lamborghini's return to lego form, builders can put together a miniature version of the huracán super trofeo evo race cars (modified versions of the huracán lp 620-2) that compete in the "fastest one-make championship in the world," as lamborghini says. the lego models were announced at the super trofeo world finals in jerez this week.
the toy huracán looks the part in black and gold parts and stickers that re-create the actual vehicle's air scoop and front diffuser. the 612-hp v-10 engine will have to be built in your imagination, though.
the other car in the set is a plastic version of the urus st-x suv (lego bricks are made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or abs). befitting the speed champions name, the real modified urus is going to compete in a special world final champions race at the misano world final in october 2020.
the new lamborghini lego set contains both cars and totals 659 pieces, including two driver minifigures. pricing was not announced.
chris stamp, lego speed champions design manager specialist, said in a statement that "lamborghini has always been on our dream list. it's just been a question of when."
of course, lego fans know that the italian brand and the danish toy company have partnered on official sets before. the first was the 2009 lego racers lamborghini gallardo lp 560-4 (set number 8169), which came in yellow. the other was a blue gallardo polizia variant (set number 8214) that was released in 2010. another lamborghini, a brick-built version of the centenario, was proposed earlier this year to become part of lego's fan-centric ideas line, but it has not yet received enough votes to possibly become an actual set.
