Maserati MC20 Takes Shape as a Mid-Engined Sports Car

Maserati
  • Maserati is sharing more tidbits about the upcoming MC20 sports car before its debut.
  • The latest photos show a prototype of the car with its actual bodywork, rather than the earlier photos of a mule that looked like a modified Alfa Romeo 4C.
  • The MC20 will debut in May and should go on sale by the end of the year.

Initial photos of Maserati's new sports car, which we now know will be called MC20, showed a test mule that seemed to be based on an Alfa Romeo 4C, suggesting to us that this new model would feature a mid-engine layout. Now, Maserati's latest photos of an MC20 prototype confirm that this is indeed the case and show the new sports car's actual bodywork in action.

Luckily, the MC20 won't look like the chopped-up 4C that we saw before. Its shape looks far more graceful than that, with a low nose, wide rear haunches, and smooth contouring. We can assume, though, that it may still share components with the Alfa underneath, such as its carbon-fiber tub chassis. We expect the standard engine to be a turbocharged V-6 with around 600 horsepower. Hybrid and electric versions of the MC20 are said to follow.

Oh, and if you've spotted a statue giving you the middle finger in Maserati's press photos, your eyes aren't deceiving you. This sculpture by Maurizio Cattelan is located in Milan in the Piazza degli Affari, and Maserati refers to it as "a symbol of Italian audacity in international contemporary art." Whether or not the MC20 itself will be similarly audacious, we'll have to wait until the car's debut in May to find out.
