these photos from instagram purport to show the new bmw 2-series coupe in the flesh. from what we can see, the new model's front and rear-end styling looks more modern than the current f22 generation, which has been around since 2013. but fortunately for enthusiasts, we know that the new model will continue with the current car's rear-wheel-drive layout, differentiating the two-door 2-series from the front-wheel drive 2-series gran coupe sedan.
the 2-series coupe pictured here appears to be some sort of m performance model, although it's not the full-bore m2. we expect the m240i variant to continue with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, and the 230i should continue on with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four. we've heard from sources at bmw that a manual transmission will continue to be available, that all-wheel drive will remain optional, and that the new model will have a unique interior design not shared with other bmw models. the convertible model will be discontinued with this new generation.
the standard 2-series models are likely to precede the eventual top-dog m2 by several months. although bmw has not yet provided any sort of timeline for the 2-series launch, we don't expect to see the car in full until 2021, meaning it should arrive in the u.s. as a 2022 model.
