Next-Gen Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ: What We Know So Far

  • toyota has confirmed that there will be another generation of the 86 sports car and its subaru brz twin, and it will again be developed with subaru.
  • we've also heard rumors that these new sports cars will use the new turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four found in several subaru models.
  • there's no word on when the new models will arrive, but we'd expect them to debut within the next year.

there's been speculation about the next generation of toyota and subaru's small rear-wheel-drive sports cars for years, and we have now our first official word from toyota that a second-generation toyota 86 and subaru brz are happening for real. the announcement is part of toyota's commitment to further its partnership with subaru, including development of future electric cars.

we're mostly interested in the sports cars, though, and we already know a fair amount about the upcoming sports cars already. a rumor from last year suggested that the new models would use subaru's turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four seen in the ascent, legacy, and outback. it makes 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque in the ascent, which would make for a meaningful improvement over the current 86/brz's naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-four with up to 205 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque.

there's no official word on the drivetrain, but we would be shocked if the new toyobaru coupes don't come standard with rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission. this will likely mean they'll ride on an updated version of the current architecture, although it's possible that they will migrate to rear-wheel-drive tnga (toyota new global architecture) underpinnings. chief engineer tetsuya tada let slip to australia's motor recently that he believes the new 86 will be "better than the supra," although we're not sure exactly what he means by that.

there's also word that the new 86 and brz will have far more driver-assist systems available as options, which may be less exciting for driving enthusiasts but follows the trend of other new sports cars such as the 992-generation porsche 911.

there has been talk of the next-generation 86 and brz first appearing in concept form sometime soon, with some outlets reporting that we may see the cars as soon as the tokyo auto show next month. c/d spoke to toyota spokesperson nancy hubbell, who quashed those rumors, but a surprise reveal wouldn't be entirely out of the realm of possibility. the current cars will stick around at least through the 2020 model year; the toyota added a hakone special edition with an attractive green paint, while the 2020 brz continues on unchanged.
