Nissan Note Is the Cooler Versa Hatch We Wont Get in the U.S.

  • nissan has revealed a new version of the note hatchback for the japanese market.
  • the note was previously sold in the u.s. as a hatch version of the subcompact versa.
  • we don't expect the new model to come to america.

nissan discontinued the versa note hatchback a few years ago in the u.s., but the model lives on elsewhere and has been redesigned for the japanese market. the new note features an interesting design and a version of nissan's e-power hybrid system that's likely to make its way to america in the near future.

while the new note's looks aren't going to set the world on fire—what subcompact hatchback would?—we think it's cooler than the current versa sedan sold on our shores. the front grille has intricate detailing and there are two-tone color options available. the interior is dominated by a large touchscreen and a digital gauge cluster, and there's a floating center console like the one in the 2021 rogue.

the note comes standard with an e-power hybrid drivetrain that primarily powers the car with an electric motor and uses a gasoline engine as a generator to power the battery pack. nissan also says a fully electric version of the note is coming in december with front and rear electric motors providing all-wheel drive. this all sounds pretty advanced compared with the u.s.-market versa's powertrain, a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter inline-four and a continuously variable automatic transmission.

we don't expect nissan to bring the note to america anytime soon, but the e-power system will likely appear in future nissan and infiniti models here.
