Our Tesla Model 3 Just Got a Bit Smarter Thanks to the Latest Software Update

  • we've updated our long-term tesla model 3 to the latest version of software version 10.2, which includes improved driving visualizations, spotify integration, and some new games.
  • "what's driving visualization?" you ask. it means the model 3 now detects traffic lights, signs, cones, trash cans, and pedestrians.
  • improvements to the voice command feature can now help find the nearest supercharger stations.

one of our favorite things about our long-term tesla model 3 is the constant improvement made possible by its over-the-air updates. we recently updated it to the latest version of the software's version 10.2 (2019.40.50.7), which added features including improvements to the driving visualizations, spotify, karaoke, and some new games.

the first things we noticed were changes to the driving graphic that is shown on the left side of the infotainment screen when driving. it now detects traffic lights (even the colors of the light), traffic signs painted on the road (such as lane arrows, railroad crossings, and bike lanes), cones, trash cans, stop signs, and pedestrians. this combination of radar and camera detection is getting a ton smarter, and tesla says this visualization is a preview of the promised full self-driving capability that's still in the works (we ordered the $6000 option so that our car will get the feature once it launches).

teslas are fun and quirky, and we've enjoyed trying out all the fun features that are in our model 3, too, such as fart mode. the latest update gave us new games for when we're waiting patiently at the nearest tesla supercharger, and we can even play karaoke now—but it's called "caraoke" in the tesla. clever, right? sometimes we get distracted from being productive by trying to master bohemian rhapsody by queen. there are also improvements to the voice command feature, so you can now simply say "where are the nearby supercharger stations?" and they will appear on the map.

speaking of music, tesla finally added spotify integration with these latest updates. now you can log in to your spotify profile and access your playlists directly from the entertainment menu. however, only one spotify account is linked to our car, and it's used on each of the 10 driver profiles (we have all 10 in use). this means testing director dave vanderwerp needs to be careful what he listens to on his spotify account because we will find out if he's rockin' the cats soundtrack, and we won't let him forget it.
