Robotics Geek Builds Herself a Tesla Pickup Truck, and You Can Watch

  • A YouTube personality named Simone Giertz bought a Tesla Model 3 and, with more than a dozen friends, modified it into a pickup truck.
  • The good-humored Giertz also made and posted a fake commercial for what she calls "Truckla."
  • She said she chose the Model 3 rather than a Model S or Model X because of its steel unibody, which was cheaper to work with than aluminum.

Swedish YouTuber and self-proclaimed "queen of sh*tty robots" Simone Giertz wanted an electric pickup truck, but she didn't have the patience to wait what may be a few years for Elon Musk, or even Rivian, to deliver an EP—that’s right, we’ve coined that term for an electric pickup—to the market.

So she did what any maker would do: she built her own.

This 31-minute YouTube clip, which feels very much like an early edition of Monster Garage (and we mean that as a a compliment), follows Giertz and 15 of her friends as they convert a new standard-range Tesla Model 3 into a pickup of sorts. Giertz admits that the whole project is a case of jumping into the deep end of the pool, because she had no way of knowing what was underneath the sedan's skin without tearing into a car. "We kind of know what we're doing. But we don't. But we're very good at improvising," said Giertz. There's a T-shirt in that quote.

Giertz also notes that the 3 was chosen over a Model S or an X not because it was necessarily cheaper, but because of the 3's steel unibody. Both the S and X sport a lot of aluminum, and while fabricating out of aluminum is an option, the raw materials would run about three times the cost of steel.

The conversion from a Tesla Model 3 into this ersatz El Camino is an interesting journey. Giertz affectionately calls it Truckla, though we like El Onmuskino better.
