ok, the 2018 alpha romeo stelvio is much cooler than phil collins, even in his genesis years (unless you're patrick bateman from "american psycho," of course), but we couldn't resist singing along with the car's melodic-sounding name. and we don't just dig how the stelvio sounds; it's no secret we're also taken with its styling. when the brand's first suv appeared at the 2016 los angeles auto show, we named it our best in show based partly on its design and performance potential.
outside, the suv stands out with its prominent nose and muscular haunches. inside, the stelvio's cabin runs from luxury-oriented to sport-themed, depending on the trim level. all models feature a few standard convenience goodies like leather front seats and a power liftgate. two multimedia screens are available, 6.5-inch or 8.8-inch, and a rotary dial controls both. apple carplay and android auto are also standard on each system.
our car was equipped with a 280-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder; a 505-hp, twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter v-6 is standard on the uplevel quadrifoglio performance model. in terms of the stelvio's performance chops, how does it measure up? the suv went nose to nose against six other compact luxury suvs — including the 2018 audi q5, 2018 bmw x3, 2018 cadillac xt5, 2019 infiniti qx50, 2018 lexus nx 300 and 2018 volvo xc60 — in our latest multicar comparison. check back june 4 to see who came out on top in the 2018 luxury compact suv challenge.
