- the mercedes-amg g63 is getting a new amg trail package for 2020.
- it adds special all-terrain tires wrapped around a new wheel design, as well as underbody protection and mud flaps.
- the package injects off-road chops back into the sportiest version of the g-wagen.
earlier this week, mercedes-benz put out a massive press release detailing a number of changes to its lineup for 2020, consisting of trim reshufflings, new packages and options, and a few updated models. but there was one item that instantly stood out to us on scanning the document: for 2020, the mercedes-amg g63 is getting what the brand is calling the amg trail package. and, man, is it awesome.
the single line in the press release reads: "optional amg trail package with first amg all-terrain tire." all-terrain tires? on the amg version of the g-wagen?! we were immediately in.
an email shot off to amg pr confirmed that our eyes were not deceiving us and that the g63 really is getting an off-road tire as an option in the united states. mercedes doesn't say what kind of tires they actually are—full u.s. spec details are still forthcoming—but the package is live on the german configurator, and they look chunky and rad as hell. (the images in this story are from said configurator.) the tires are wrapped around a new 20-inch wheel design that looks beefier and less outright sporty than the g63's other available designs.
and the awesomeness doesn't stop at the wheels and tires. the package also adds additional underbody protection, all-weather rubber floor mats for the interior, and a great set of mud flaps behind the rear wheels. in europe, it also brings along heat-insulating tinted glass, but that doesn't seem to be carried over to the u.s. package. we also don't know pricing yet; in germany, the package costs the equivalent of $3517 at current exchange rates. not bad considering the g63's larger 22-inch wheels are almost identically priced.
we realize it's a bit silly to take mercedes's legendary off-roader, choose the very compromised, on-road-focused amg model, and then add back in some off-road ability at the cost of said on-road dynamics. but that's exactly why we think this is so cool. the g63 is already extremely absurd—it'll almost do a wheelie—and this new trail package just makes it even more so. now we're just gonna sit here twiddling our thumbs until one shows up at our office so we can go off-road it.
