This Is the New Land Rover Defenders Production Interior

  • the new land rover defender's interior has been potentially leaked on twitter and now confirmed by spy photos.
  • the tweeted photo was most likely of a mockup of the final design.
  • the defender will go on sale in the u.s. next year.

update 6/24/19: new spy photos have revealed the production land rover defender's interior, and it pretty much exactly matches the leaked photo from earlier this year. we can now see things like the final climate controls and the buttons that surround them, which include switches for the off-road driving modes. it also looks like the electronic shifter is the final piece, and we can see touch-capacitive buttons on the steering wheel. the infotainment screen seems to be running a new infotainment system, as it doesn't match other jaguar land rover products. the only major difference between these spy shots and the older picture is the plastic shroud around the screen, which isn't a final piece and is just there to house the emergency stop button and cover up some of the design.

the new land rover defender has been one of the most talked about and eagerly anticipated new models to come out in a long time—and it isn't even out yet. over the past nearly ten years we've seen two different concepts, have been subjected to years of speculation and changing information, and have seen many spy photos of the real thing, and have finally gotten confirmation that it will be sold in the united states. up until now, though, the only photos that have emerged are of the outside of the car with it covered in camouflage, but today we may have gotten our first look at the new defender's interior.

the image (above), which was posted by a jewelry designer on twitter and has since been deleted in response to a tweet about an unrelated car, seems like it shows a styling mockup for the defender's final, production-ready interior. (meaning, a full-scale model created by designers out of materials like foam and plastic to finalize a design without producing the real thing.) some key details point to this being the case: none of the buttons or controls, like the ones on the steering wheel or center console, have any icons or writing on them. the gas and brake pedals look concept-car-like, with "stop" and "go" stamped on them; that's designer frippery that wouldn't make it onto a production car. another tell is the extremely poor material quality. the "leather" looks more like vinyl, and the "metal" trim on the steering wheel and dashboard looks more like plastic.

but when it comes to the design, this seems like the real deal. it looks unlike every other land rover currently on sale—a lot blockier and less luxury-oriented, as one would expect a defender to be. the digital gauge cluster and main central screen (likely a touch unit) seem to be lifted from existing jaguar land rover products, as does the electronic shifter, but components like the steering wheel and air vents are unique. knobs for the climate control and infotainment are located high up on the shelf-like console, just below the central screen, and they're surrounded by some physical buttons. this leave room for a large amount of free area below the console, and we can see power outlets and some storage space. in front of the passenger is a large aluminum-look panel with "defender" stamped into it, and the badge is present on the steering wheel, too. the horizontal theme is actually reminiscent of defenders from the 1990s—maybe not the kind of retro that defender fans were hoping for, but slightly retro nonetheless.

another reason we think it's legit? the head of land rover's uk pr responded to the tweet, saying "how about you now remove this image that you’ve publicly stated you shouldn’t post. legal team are on the way." that's a wild thing to say if this isn't the real thing. now, he could just be pulling our leg, or trying to add more attention onto something that isn't the final interior (or isn't even a land rover styling proposal at all). only time will tell whether or not this interior really is legit.

need to know how much time? land rover has said that the new defender will debut at some point in 2019 before going on sale in the u.s. in 2020. we know that the defender will ride on a unibody platform shared with other jlr products, be offered in both two- and four-door body styles, and come with a lineup of four- and six-cylinder engines, but many other details are still shrouded in secrecy.
