Trio of 2019 Toyota Trucks Up Trail Cred With TRD Pro Trim Level

2019 Toyota TRD Pro

For the 2019 model year, the TRD Pro trim level is back for Toyota's Tacoma and Tundra pickups as well as the 4Runner SUV. The new TRD Pro Series is getting its debut at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show. First unveiled in 2014, the returning TRD Pro off-road trim offers one of the best four-wheel-drive packages in the industry. Each of the 2019 trucks will sport an upgraded front and rear suspension setup, specially tuned high-performance Fox internal bypass shock absorbers and a updated quarter-inch-thick front skid plate.

Although all three share several of the key components in the aggressive off-road package, each of the three has unique features as well. For example, the Tacoma now offers an available desert air intake (sometimes called a snorkel) to help find cleaner air for the intake when on a dusty trail or to prevent water from being sucked into the air intake during a water crossing.

Likewise, the 4Runner has a pair of uniquely inverted rear shocks to accommodate the 2-inch piggyback reservoir, and also offers a large roof-rack option. Finally, the Tundra TRD Pro offers a new slotted intake hood and a set of 18-inch BBS aluminum wheels.

All three 2019 TRD Pro trucks will have upgraded safety features, with the Star Safety System standard on each; it includes stability and traction control, anti-lock brake system, brake-force distribution and smart-stop technology. Additionally, the two pickups come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P, which also includes both precollision and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, sway control, auto high beams and radar cruise control.

Trivia time: The TRD Pro trim level was offered on both the Tacoma and 4Runner for the 2018 model year, but not for the Tundra. The last model-year Tundra to offer the TRD Pro trim was the 2017. Why? Toyota decided the 2018 TRD Sport trim, new to the Tundra, would fill that special-edition void for that single model year. Both trims will be offered for 2019.

The TRD Pro trim for all three players will be available in the fall, with pricing released closer to the on-sale date. TRD Pro vehicles will be offered in three colors: Super White, Midnight Black Metallic and the all-new Voodoo Blue (a TRD Pro exclusive).
