VW Shows More of ID.4 Electric SUV in Production Form

  • the id.4 will be the first ev based on volkswagen’s meb platform to come to the u.s.
  • it’ll have an estimated driving range of up to 310 miles.
  • the u.s.-spec version will eventually be built in chattanooga, tennessee.

volkswagen announced that the id crozz concept suv will officially be known as the id.4 when it reaches production, which is a surprise to absolutely no one. the electric crossover will be the first vehicle on vw's meb electric platform to make its way to the united states and will initially launch in europe later in 2020.

the production vehicle you see here is still wearing camouflage, but it’s not difficult to see that it takes its cues from the automaker’s current design language. it looks the id.3 electric hatchback (which is not coming to the united states) grew up and started hitting the gym.

the initial run of the id.4 will be rear-wheel drive with a single rear-mounted electric motor, and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant will follow. volkswagen is mum on the battery capacity but said that the vehicle will have a range of up to 500 kilometers based on the european wltp standard. that works out to roughly 310 miles per charge—although of course, the epa will have the final word on range once it gets its hands on the id.4 for u.s.-market testing.

the interior will sport touch controls similar to what we’ve seen in the production id.3. but unlike tesla, the features will not be confined to a single display. volkswagen says that the packaging of the modular meb platform allows for more room inside than a gas-powered crossover with a similar exterior footprint.

volkswagen claims the id.4 will be the first carbon-neutral suv produced at the zwickau, germany plant, which is already churning out id.3s. but it will eventually expand to production to china and north america, with plans to begin building the id.4 in chattanooga, tennessee in 2022. the id.3 and id.4 are only the beginning, with the microbus-inspired id buzz and other id vehicles set to enter production in the coming years. the automaker says it plans to build 1.5 million electric vehicles by 2025.
