dodge just built the lastof its drag-strip-optimized, fire-breathing challenger srt demons. but you're not entirely out of luck if you missed out on that limited edition — or if it was just a little too much for you. we now have word that rising from the demon's coffin will be a slightly more civilized, demon-inspired, 797-horsepower srt hellcat redeye street machine. it will join the 2019 challenger srt hellcat and more affordable 2019 r/t scat pack in the challenger muscle lineup.

"with 840 hp, a 9.65 quarter-mile time and guinness world record certification that it's the first production car to lift the wheels at launch, the dodge challenger srt demon earned its place in the record books," said steve beahm, head of passenger cars in north america for fiat chrysler automobiles. "the dodge brothers would be proud that we're leveraging the power and performance of this proven used engine to bring a demon-possessed challenger srt hellcat redeye to an even wider high-performance enthusiast audience."

dodge had teased that it would tinker with its challenger v-8 muscle metal with some new performance goodies. we knew that the dodge challenger srt hellcat was getting a very cool new two-snorkel hood inspired by 1970s dart muscle cars. now we know that the 2019 challenger r/t scat pack will get the hood, too, as well as the option of the hellcat's widebody package with flared fenders allowing wider wheels and bigger, stickier rubber along with the aggressive good looks.

we know, too, that the new hood will help add 10 hp to the hellcat, for a new rating of 717 hp, along with a brutish 656 pounds-feet of torque. and perhaps most important, we know that these 2019 challengers can be yours as of the fourth quarter of 2018.

but the new star of the show gives a whole new meaning to taking the red-eye. the challenger srt hellcat redeye will be dodge's most powerful and quickest muscle car, adding to the regular hellcat what will now be dodge's most powerful v-8 and quickest zero-to-60-mph sprint. the redeye includes all the performance, chassis and launch features of the hellcat and adds an used engine with a bushel of performance upgrades to make the redeye a near-demon that could be your daily driver, too.

here's what you need to know about the new redeye:

  • performance: the redeye will hit 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. its quarter-mile elapsed time for the fastest version is estimated at 10.8 seconds, hitting 131 mph. top speed is 203 mph. like the hellcat (and the r/t scat pack, too, for 2019), the redeye can be had in widebody form with the 3.5-inch wider fenders for bigger wheels and tires. that quarter-mile is for the wide version and compares to 10.9 seconds at 127 mph for a hellcat widebody; 11.1 at 131 mph for a regular redeye; and 11.2 at 125 mph for a regular hellcat.
  • powertrain: the supercharged 6.2-liter hemi v-8 puts out 797 hp and 707 pounds-feet of torque, and it's redlined at 6,500 rpm (versus 6,200 for the hellcat). it's mated to a performance eight-speed automatic.
  • demon dna: dodge says the v-8 gets 25 demon-inspired upgrades, including a larger supercharger, stronger rods and pistons, improved lubrication, an upgraded valve train and two dual-stage fuel pumps (versus one in the hellcat). it says the supercharger is the largest on any production car at 2.7 liters (versus the hellcat's 2.4 liters) and has a boost pressure of 14.5 pounds per square inch (versus the hellcat's 11.6 psi).
  • a yuge appetite when pushed: at full throttle, the redeye sucks down 1.43 gallons per minute of high-octane fuel, enough to drain its tank in 11 minutes. yet dodge still estimates its normal highway fuel use at 22 mpg.
  • air supply (not the soft-rock "dance with me" kind): a larger-induction air box draws air from the new dual-snorkel hood, a driver-side "air catcher" headlamp and an inlet near the front wheel liner.
  • chill out: standard on the redeye is the srt "power chiller" that diverts air-conditioning refrigerant to a chiller unit to lower the intake air temperature.
  • choice of final drive ratios: 2.62:1 is standard; 3.09:1 is available for faster sprints.
  • interior details to remind you that it's the redeye: the model gets a 220-mph red speedometer (versus the hellcat's 200-mph dial) and a black-chrome redeye badge on the dash.
