The 2018 Mercedes -Benz S-Class made its North American press debut recently, and our Washington, D.C., Bureau Chief Fred Meier was on hand to get behind the wheel of the various models on hand. Here are some reasons why you should check it out.

1. Safety Tech

The technology available in the S-Class continues to push toward a future where cars can be driven or autopiloted, depending entirely on preference. The new S-Class includes improvements to adaptive cruise control, automatic lane changes and higher-speed steering assist.

2. Ride Comfort

The adaptive air suspensions in both the S560 and AMG S63 sedans did, in Meier's estimation, excellent jobs of keeping road imperfections from intruding and negatively impacting a pleasant drive. The adaptive suspension includes a stereo camera that detects oncoming imperfections and preemptively adjusts the suspension. It also adjusts body roll and shift to keep things composed.

3. Get Up and Go

Comfortable ride or not, both the S560 and S63 have the means to get you where you're going quickly. For big, heavy luxury sedans, claimed zero-to-60-mph times of 4.6 seconds for the S560 and 3.4 seconds for the AMG S63 (when using launch control) are quite impressive.

4. Customization

Buyers of a 2018 S-Class can select options along with paint and interior color and material choices to make the sedan their own. Those choices will run the price up quickly, however: The two test cars Meier drove had nearly $30,000 to $40,000 in options.

5. Party Tricks

Want a fridge in the backseat? Silver champagne flutes? Mercedes -Benz has you covered. The new S-Class even has a new Energizing Comfort Control system ]that promotes wellness, too, with six settings: Freshness, Warmth, Vitality, Joy, Comfort and Training. (Those will be fun to show off to new passengers but otherwise never use.)

Check out the gallery above to get a better look at the 2018 Mercedes -Benz S-Class. The S560 with all-wheel drive and AMG S63 are available now; additional models are due at the end of the year and in mid-2018.
