Vehicles Affected: Approximately 741,000 model-year 2008-11 BMW 128i hatchbacks; model-year 2007-11 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i and 530xi sedans; model-year 2007-11 X3 3.0si, X3 xDrive30i and X5 xDrive30i SUVs; and model-year 2007-11 Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si and Z4 sDrive30i roadsters

The Problem: The heater for the positive crankcase ventilation valve may short circuit, causing the parts within the valve to melt and increasing the risk of a fire, even when the vehicle is not in use.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the PCV valve heater for free.

What Owners Should Do: BMW will begin notifying owners Dec. 18. Owners can call the automaker at 800-525-7417, the National Highway Traffic Safety Ad Mini stration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
