2016 Ford Owners: Get Android Auto, Apple CarPlay

Just because you own a vehicle from one measly model year ago doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy the same latest technological conveniences as someone with a newer car. Ford announced today that model-year 2016 vehicle owners can now acquire Android Auto and Apple CarPlay via an over-the-air update to the Sync 3 multimedia system.

Ford noted that this is the first time it has offered Sync updates over the air to Wi-Fi-enabled vehicles. Owners just need to turn on the automatic system updates function in the Sync 3 system, which will then periodically connect to the owner's designated Wi-Fi network to check for updates.

"If an update is available, the system automatically downloads the update in the background over a period of time without any customer interaction," Ford explained in a statement, noting that there's no need to keep the vehicle running for the update to take place.

Owners also can get the update by going to owner.ford.com and downloading the update via a USB drive, or by visiting a Ford dealership to have the update performed for them.

The Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration systems are, respectively, compatible with Android devices 5.0 and higher and iPhone5 devices running iOS 7.1 or higher. Ford's entire 2017 vehicle lineup already supports both systems.
