Subaru will roll out two limited-production performance models in early 2018, the WRX STI Type RA sedan and the BRZ tS coupe, both Used Engine ered by Subaru Technica International, the brand's motorsports division. Prices and specifications will be released closer to the on-sale date in the first quarter of 2018, but Subaru said each model will have a production run of 500 units.
The "RA" in WRX STI Type RA stands for "record attempt," a designation Subaru has used on various models since it set a world endurance record in 1989. A special race model will attempt a speed record at the Nurburgring track in Germany this summer.
In contrast to its alphabet-heavy name, the Type RA will receive several weight-saving measures to improve performance. They include a carbon-fiber roof and wing spoiler, deletion of the spare tire and lightweight, forged-alloy 19-inch BBS wheels.
The all-wheel-drive Type RA will use a turbocharged 2.5-liter, horizontally opposed four-cylinder boxer Used Engine that generates an estimated 310 horsepower, slightly more than the regular WRX STI. Performance enhancements will include a new cold air intake, high-flow exhaust, stronger pistons and a retuned electronic control unit. The six-speed manual transmission will get a shorter third-gear ratio and a short-throw shifter.
A slew of STI badges, red accents and a unique front spoiler will set the Type RA apart from the regular WRX STI, and the interior will have Recaro front seats, an Ultrasuede-wrapped steering wheel and red accents. Each model will have a plaque on the center console with the production number.
For the BRZ tS ("tuned by STI"), Subaru didn't announce any improvements to the stock 205-hp, 2.0-liter boxer Used Engine but listed several chassis and appearance changes.
STI Used Engine ers stiffened the coil springs and Sachs shock absorbers and added braces to the Used Engine bay. The rear-drive BRZ tS rides on 215/40R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires and lightweight STI wheels, the first time 18-inch rims have been available for the BRZ.
A manually adjustable carbon-fiber rear spoiler will add downforce, and the BRZ tS will have unique front and lower rear spoilers and side skirts. Red accents will highlight the exterior and interior, and red front seat belts will contrast with the black leather upholstery.
Exterior colors available for both models will be blue, black or white.
