Apple iPhones and iPads will soon have a feature intended to combat distracted driving. The iOS 11 operating system will launch later this year with a "Do Not Disturb while driving" feature that restricts phone functions to help drivers stay more focused on the road, according to Apple's iOS 11 announcement.
How Much Do Conversations Behind the Wheel Distract You?
The function automatically detects when you're driving and will silence your phone to keep it from being a distraction. Users can also configure the phone to send an automatic reply to favorited contacts informing them you're behind the wheel.
Owners of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles vehicles with Uconnect 8.4 may be scratching their heads and asking, "What's the big deal?" because those with a compatible Android phone and a Chrysler Pacifica, for example, have a "Do Not Disturb" feature built into the car's Uconnect touchscreen. When activated, Uconnect intercepts text messages, calls and replies with a standard or customized message. The Uconnect feature is not compatible with iPhones, however.
Apple's Do Not Disturb while driving feature launches this fall on iPhone and iPad devices.
