                         2007-2009, 2012 Mazda CX-7, CX-9 and 2009, 2012 Mazda6: Recall Alert

Approximately 79,400 model-year 2012 Mazda CX-7 and CX-9 SUVs, and Mazda6 sedans sold or ever registered in so-called "Zone A" states and territories including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan) and the U.S. Virgin Islands; as well as model-year 2009 CX-7, CX-9 and Mazda6 vehicles sold or ever registered in Zone B (unless included in Zone A) states including Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia; and model-year 2007-08 CX-7s and CX-9s (unless included in Zone A or B) sold or ever registered in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming

The Problem: Airbag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal airbag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment may rupture in a crash necessitating airbag deployment due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments spewing into the cabin and striking vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

The airbag inflators were manufactured by Japan's Takata Corp. and are part of the massive ongoing recall that has resulted in at least a dozen U.S. deaths. Read more about Mazda's latest Takata recall here.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the front passenger-side airbag inflator with an alternate inflator for free.

What Owners Should Do: Mazda will begin notifying owners today. Owners can call the automaker at 800-222-5500, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
