this is the first detailed look at the 2022 mercedes-benz eqs, an all-electric luxury sedan coming to streets near you soon. while mechanical and performance details will have to wait, mercedes has shown photos of the interior and given us details on this ev’s design ahead of its production launch. the eqs will offer a dashboard-spanning infotainment screen (as well as a more minimalist alternative), artful interior design, elegant materials selection, and a futuristic exterior with fresh proportions, as well as a selection of “soundscapes” designed to give auditory feedback to the driver.
interior design
the eqs’ interior is the real star of this particular show. front and center—well, spanning the whole dash, actually—is mercedes-benz’s new hyperscreen. the monolithic sheet of glass spans the entirety of the dashboard, encompassing the driver’s instrument cluster, the center display, and the front passenger area. within that sheet of glass are multiple screens, enabling what appears to be a flexible, intuitive arrangement of cabin and entertainment controls. the hyperscreen can display various ambient backgrounds when not in use, complementing the rgb ambient lighting throughout the cabin.
if all that glass and screen is less than appealing to you, fret not: mercedes will offer a more conventional vertically oriented floating display (pictured below) like that in the new s-class sedan. it hovers just in front of the center of the dashboard, anchored to the center console. in the hyperscreen-less eqs variants, the dash can instead be covered in a variety of wood, metal, or other materials, with a range of finishes and designs. whichever screen you choose, the center console just below is an architectural affair, floating delicately between the driver and passenger seats, leaving ample storage space beneath.
exterior design
we have yet to see uncamouflaged photos of the eqs’s exterior. but we do know that is is based on the vision eqs concept and that it will be artfully devoid of excessive detail, preferring smooth arcs and aerodynamically rounded edges to the hard-edged cyber-dystopian style of futuristic design.
a single arching line, termed a “one bow” line, extends from the rear of the front wheel well, defining the roof line and sweeping through the rear of the car. in a modern homage to a classic electrical innovation, the taillights are modeled after the helix shape of the element of an old-fashioned edison bulb. to emphasize the eqs’s electric-powered nature, the hood is much shorter than you’d find on a combustion-powered full-size luxury sedan; likewise, the rear overhang is very short. the optional 22-inch wheels add to the imposing scale of the eqs. the result is a long-wheelbase, long-cabin form factor that should yield a great deal of interior space for occupants.
soundscapes
if the futuristic exterior design and mega-screen interior aren’t enough for you, perhaps you’ll enjoy the various sounds the eqs makes while driving. synthesized entirely by the mercedes-benz team, the artificial driving sounds range from mellow, everyday commuter comfort to more aggressive, sporty noises. mercedes sound designer thomas küppers describes silver waves mode as “soft, elegant...not the most emotional sound.” bump the enthusiasm to vivid flux for an electronica-inspired soundtrack, or all the way to roaring pulse, which küppers describes as “dedicated to the people who stick to strong associations with powerful machines. think of big, big engines, turbines, and add in a force of nature, like a volcano.”
