new photos posted on a bronco sport forum give us the best look yet at the smaller, crossover-based ford bronco sport ahead of its april unveiling. it's a busy time for the bronco nameplate, with the standard truck-based ford bronco suv scheduled to debut later this month and this smaller bronco sport model set to arrive in april at the new york auto show.
the bronco sport, also known as the "baby bronco," looks almost exactly how we pictured it. it has a bold "bronco" script across the grille, round headlights, a boxy shape, roof rails, and a little more ground clearance than the escape it's based upon. it'll use the same unibody platform as the new 2020 ford escape, and we expect it to borrow the escape's powertrains as well.
the standard engine will be a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder will be optional. additionally, ford said it'll offer a hybrid powertrain in the bronco sport, which should be the same as the escape hybrid's naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four and electric motor. the bronco sport will have an optional all-wheel-drive system, which could include a differential lock and/or a low range, to support its off-road appearance.
even though the bronco suv will make its official debut first, the bronco sport will arrive at dealers ahead of its big sibling. ford reportedly told dealers the bronco will show up later this year, while the bronco won't go on sale until early 2021. expect to see a starting price under $30,000 for the bronco sport.
