Motorsport Manager App Lets You Run Your Own Formula E Team

  • an online app for ios and android lets users pretend they're the brains behind the operation of a formula e racing team.
  • users can pick the look of the cars, choose drivers, and direct their style during races.
  • both campaign (career) and one-off race modes let users get as deep or as shallow as they want into the formula e digital world.

if there's one thing formula e organizers are sure of, it's that people love formula e. the latest example is the inclusion of the all-electric racing series to the motorsport manager online app. while there are plenty of racing simulation games out there, this one challenges you not to actually drive something blisteringly fast around a track, but to work behind the scenes gathering the right parts and then giving orders to your virtual drivers as they race.

the free-to-play app is about as close to becoming a formula e team boss as you can get without having to, you know, manage a team. the app uses licensed liveries for added realism in the game and there are eight different formula e gen 2 cars to unlock. once you've picked out a look, there's a lot to control in mmo, from big things like hiring actual drivers (with realistic avatars and distinct driving attributes) and the track location to smaller items like brakes, tires, suspension and gearbox.

you don't actually control your cars during the race (how could you, when you can enter two drivers per event?), but during the race, you're not just a passive watcher. you can apply a different strategy to your drivers in each race. there's perfect race start, for example, which gives you a bonus during the first lap. you can only apply one strategy per race, which is probably good for the game but not exactly realistic. you can modify your vehicles through pit stops to change the tires or adjust the power mode (low, medium or high) and driving styles (conserve, neutral, attack) for your drivers.

there are different games modes in the app, including career mode where you create your own team out of the current full formula e grid. as you can probably guess, the decisions you made about parts and strategy have an impact on how your team does in the standings, which then earns you points and in-game money to spend on improved vehicles for future races and keep rising up the online leaderboard.

there's also the formula e race mode, which lets players use fe-specific aspects like attack mode and fanboost as they race for a current fe team based on the current, real-world lineup. another nice touch is how the app mimics the futuristic noise of a real formula e race.

the designers of the app, playsport games, previously released stand-alone versions of motorsport manager online, called motorsport manager mobile, which have been well received. the latest edition, mmm 3, has a 4.9 (out of 5) rating on the ios app store based on more than 4000 ratings. what's different in this new edition is that it allows you not only to race fe cars, but also compete with other managers around the world.
